Times Table Fluency
Learn the patterns, then practise until recall is fast.
Fast families
2s are doubles
Think of 2 × n as n + n.
5s end in 0 or 5
The answers alternate between 0 and 5 in the ones place.
10s add a zero
Multiply by 10 by shifting one place left.
11s repeat for small facts
For small facts, 11 × n often looks like the digit repeated.
Patterns to notice
3s are one more group than 2s
Work out the 2s fact, then add one more group.
4s are doubles of doubles
Double once, then double again.
9s are one group less than 10s
Find 10 groups, then subtract one group.
12s can be 10s + 2s
Split the fact into an easy 10s fact and a 2s fact.

Coach notes
1. Learn 2, 5, 10 first because the patterns are easy to spot.
2. Use doubles to help with 4s and 8s. Example: 4 × 6 is double of 2 × 6.
3. Use tens and one more group for 9s. Example: 9 × 7 = 10 × 7 − 7.
